OUD –  Do not be mislead

Increasingly of late you may notice products on store shelves or as you search a platform like Amazon which bares the name or a reference to Oud.   You  might also notice these products are not overly expensive and yet Oud is one of the most expensive materials to buy!

This is the health and beauty industry up to it’s old marketing tricks.

Time and again such companies will do anything even lie to get you to buy their product.

” Oud has become a popular component in perfumery. Most brands have a creation based on or dedicated to “oud” or an accord of oud created through the use of certain chemical scent components. Few perfume houses use real oud in their creations. This is because oud is very expensive and potent. Oud is generally used as a base note and is traditionally paired with rose. Oud essential oil is available on the internet but care should be taken in choosing the vendor. Due to the fact that oud is such an expensive material there is a big market for diluting oud oil with patchouli or other chemical components.”

OUD is extracted from …. ” Agarwood, aloeswood, eaglewood, gharuwood or the Wood of Gods, commonly referred to as oud or oudh. it  is a fragrant, dark and resinous wood used in incense, perfume, and small hand carvings.”

A friend arrived at the pub smelling very nice indeed. I asked her what the perfume was “Oud she replied. I asked if I could see the packaging. It was a very expensive well well-known brand, but, sure enough, on the ingredients list was Patchouli, not Oud. After a brief discussion, she accepted that she had, in fact, been duped by the product manufacturer, just like many others.

Basically if a product claims to have Oud in it and is cheap it probably does not, It probably has a chemical copy or Patchouli oil. Always check the ingredients list.
